Scandocious JR

Good news!  Chicago rapper Scandocious JR created another good song.  The controversial emcee whose discography makes his talents evenly a hit-or-miss debate.  JR’s latest single “Secret Belief” finds him reminiscing the gushy feelings he has over his new love interest who arrived as a surprise in his life.

Forgive JR’s “singing” in this track because his lyrics are very heartfelt and relatable.  Many of us can attest to that one love who has crept into our hearts.

THE G-SOUND: “Boyfriend” by @KingOfGayMusic (Scandocious J.R.) [MUST LISTEN...TRUST!]

Scandocious JR5

Scandocious JR3

A miracle happened today, we discover the best song recorded/released by veteran Chicago emcee Scandocious J.R.  If you follow his music as much as we do, you know there is no shade in that statement.  It is the real tea, and this new single from his Adebowale album is serving hot tea.

This song, written and produced entirely by J.R., possess the gift and curse of the Chicago rapper’s reputation among his peers in the community and music scene.  This tune proves that J.R. can construct a hip-hop soul jam especially when it is themed around a topic of love and relationships where gay men everywhere can relate.  At the same time, after the rapper releases a genius song like “Boyfriend,” he releases videos and songs ubiquitously that cheapens his previous best.  Thus, his legacy is built around countless ridiculed tracks like “Boy Toy” instead of profoundly remarkable standouts such as “Marry Me” that deserve hall-of-fame status.

Nonetheless, this one of the few mainstream [gay] radio-friendly tracks that every outlet applicable should give a listen.  Whether you are gay, lesbian or transgender…as long as you are single, you will relate to this song.

Lyrically, J.R. deserves the most applause because his wordplay is impeccable, especially with this snippet from the second verse where he interpolates popular radio tunes, current and golden, into his quest for finding love:

I can make him dance because I got them “Bandz.” …I run to the radio and turn it on.  I must be Toni ’cause it’s just “Another Sad Love Song.” I’m like my boy Keith. I can “Make You Sweat.”

Enough with the praise, press play below so you can enjoy our favorite song of January 2013.  [You read that right..."our favorite song of 2013"]

HOT TOPIC: Has @4EverBrandy’s “Two Eleven” Album Flopped?

Brandy 2012

1990′s R&B/Pop superstar Brandy had much to celebrate over the past few weeks achieving milestones many of her contemporaries, past and present, can only dream to become reality.  The “Wildest Dreams” entertainer survived 18 years in the music business as a viable act regardless of major setbacks that plagued her within the past decade.  Despite her public fall from grace from a chart-topping diva to a tabloid fixture, the public opinion never counted her out during the lowest points of her career.  Thus, after 18 years in show business and 10 years without a hit single or album, Brandy achieved a #3 R&B hit, a #3 Pop album and #1 R&B album this year with her new opus Two Eleven and its first single “Put It Down.”

First week sales numbers were in, Brandy’s Two Eleven album managed to sell about 68,000 units.  In today’s music world where first week sales have determined whether an album is (or will be) successful or a flop, the number is quite disappointing.  Compare her recent week sales to music artists who are currently (or would have been) her rivals such as Rihanna (198K), Beyonce (310K), Alicia Keys (417K), Mary J. Blige (156K), Trey Songz (137K), Chris Brown (135K), Usher (128K), Keyshia Cole (128K) and Jennifer Hudson (165K), Brandy’s achievement seemed quite underwhelming.

Of course, fans and supporters will quickly come up a list of who or what to blame including music downloading, promotion to R&B outlets, live  promotional events to predominately Black gay male audiences, four-year music absence, bad first single choice, being on the same label with other superstars (Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Kesha, Chris Brown, R. Kelly) etc.

My biggest concern for Brandy’s new music is that, unlike Beyonce, Keyshia, Alicia and Rihanna, the “So Sick” singer did not deliver a song or two that packs a “wow” factor and that can also crossover to pop while remaining R&B (a la “Have You Ever” or “The Boy Is Mine”).  Another concern I have is, that while the album sounds really good sonically, I find Brandy’s lead vocals get lost in the background vocals and production instead of taking each opportunity to ensure that her voice is front and center owning each song to the point one listener cannot imagine another singer slaying a Two Eleven track better than Brandy.

In other words, my consensus is that the low sales number is contributed to Ms. Norwood not bringing all of the swagger back as she had during her Never S-A-Y Never and Full Moon era.  While this Brandy era is far better than the Afrodisiac and Human eras, there is still a weakness looming the extremely talented entertainer when comparing her swagger to the dominating R&B and pop divas including Christina, Beyonce, Keyshia, Rihanna and Adele.  I believer wholeheartedly that Brandy can do better, and now was that opportunity.

I asked a handful of LGBT personalities to chime on what they determined of Brandy’s Two Eleven first week sales.  Was it flop or a success?  Here is what they had to say:

THE G-SOUNDZ: “Between His Legs” by Scandocious J.R.

JR - King of Gay Music 21

Scandocious J.R. dropped a club banger titled “Between His Legs.”  What we like about this song is that it reminds of us Jackie O’s classic hip-hop banger “Nookie.”  Again, JR gives us pleasure ear candy that could serve as the backdrop to the next LGBT film or online TV episode.

Check out the bangin’ song below.

THE G-SOUNDZ: “Peter Pan” by Scandocious J.R.

JR - King of Gay Music 13

Chicago rapper Scandocious has put his bid in as one of our favorite gay rappers because we have posted up songs from his “Untold Truth” album and have given almost every song, except “Boy Toy,” raving reviews.  The compliments continue with this new track “Peter Pan.”  This song can serve as our message to the exes we dated who really need to grow up.

Get a good listen of the song below.  We bet you can relate to what we are talking about.

THE G-SOUNDZ: “You’ll Remember Me” by Scandocious J.R.

JR - King of Gay Music (2)

Chicago rapper Scandocious J.R. has been hitting home runs with his music lately.  From his “Untold Truth” album, the “Boy Toy” rapper gives fans a taste of another song titled “You’ll Remember Me.”  Citing karma as his best revenge, JR taunts his jilted ex-lover about how the grass is not greener on the other side now that his kismet became his cataclysm.

While JR’s lyrics are sharper than ever, the musical background of an gritty east coast hip-hop influenced instrumentation serves as a piercing “I Told You So” to his former paramour.  Get into the lyrics of the bridge.

“You wasn’t the smartest
You wasn’t the cutest
You wasn’t the artist
You wasn’t the truest
You wasn’t the best
You just like the rest”

We love it and hope to see more work of this caliber from the “Will You Marry Me Boy” rapper.

THE G-SOUNDZ: “The Boy Next Door” by Scandocious J.R.

JR - King of Gay Music (3)

Recently, we sung the praises of Chicago rapper Scandocious J.R. over his new single “Letter To My Ex.”  The veteran emcee keeps the stellar momentum going with the song’s B-side “The Boy Next Door.”

With this song and the prior, we see JR’s strength.  When thorough strategy, J.R. can be a great story teller, which is a skill that some of our greatest rappers do not possess.

When listening to the lyrics, if you decide that “Boy Next Door” is just another perverted, sexually-charged tune by J.R., you need to listen again.  Scandocious reminisces over a young love affair when he and his “friend” were seventeen exploring and experimenting each other physically.  He does not stick to the literal route of the story.  J.R. journeys through the psyche of both subjects of the song as well as the other surprise players involved.

Again, if you’ve knocked Scandocious J.R. before as a talented rapper, your mind will be changed here.

Check out the hot tune below.
